Invisible Wounds - Mental Health and Cognitive Care Needs of America's Returning Veterans

This research brief provides an overview of a comprehensive study that was conducted by the RAND Corporation. This study focused on "... the mental health and cognitive needs of returning service members and veterans." Three major conditions were focused on: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study addressed questions in the following three areas: prevalence, the care system, and costs. The following is a summary of the questions focused on:

  • What are the rates of mental health and cognitive conditions of returning troops?
  • What programs and services exist to meet the health care needs of these troops?
  • What are the societal costs of these conditions?

The research brief provides background information on the mental health and cognitive needs of returning Veterans, and briefly discusses the findings of the study.
