Centering the Voices of Graduates to Shape Self-Advocacy

Centering the Voices of Graduates to Shape Self-Advocacy in Special Education Transition Programs: A Qualitative Study

Special Education transition programs in federally funded schools are accountable for delivering quality transition services, including self-advocacy instruction, to prepare students for adulthood. The majority of current research and evidence-based practices for self-advocacy are very narrow, prioritizing the IEP process and school setting as the primary vehicle for self-advocacy development. The ineffective nature of these practices is amplified when examining how current research and practice privilege the perspectives of professionals that often do not have working knowledge of what students experience after they graduate.

This research study explores the self-advocacy experiences of graduates with disabilities, to gain a deeper understanding of their unique challenges as they age and the self-advocacy skills or knowledge they found most useful in adulthood.

How Educators Can Help Students with Intellectual Disability to Think College

Students with intellectual disability want to go to college - and they can! But they can’t get there alone. They need educators who understand what skills are necessary to make it happen and will support them to achieve their goals. Think College created the “Think Higher. Think College.” public awareness campaign to inform and educate teachers, school administrators, support professionals, college staff and faculty, families, and students themselves that college is an option for students with intellectual disability. The public awareness campaign includes new tools to make the process easy to understand and doable. Join this free webinar to learn about the current picture of inclusive higher education in the US, hear from college students with intellectual disability from around the country, and learn from a panel of experienced educators how we can “Think Higher. Think College.” together.

During this webinar:

  • Attendees will learn about the current situation regarding college options for students with intellectual disability.
  • Attendees will learn about new resources from the Think Higher. Think College. campaign.
  • Attendees will hear from a panel comprised of two K-12 educators and a program director from an inclusive postsecondary education program about what options exist for students with ID, how to guide students to pursue college, and how to assemble a team to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college.

Making Employment Work!

This webinar will include an overview of the main federal laws that focus on preventing disability discrimination in employment and will discuss common questions about reasonable accommodations, disclosing disability to potential or current employers, and disability-based harassment or discrimination.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the main federal laws relating to disability discrimination in employment contexts
  2. Recognize situations where applicants or employees with disabilities may strategically advocate for their rights

Artificial Intelligence and the ADA: Understanding How Employment Discrimination May Occur

Artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the design of software and use of algorithms, is changing how employers evaluate applicants and employees. While such technological advances offer certain advantages, they also may result in discrimination against qualified applicants and employees with a wide range of disabilities in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. While employers play a primary role in efforts to prevent discrimination, individuals with disabilities may want to make inquiries to ensure that they understand when and how these technologies may be deployed in order to determine if they need to request reasonable accommodation. This session will discuss why an employer cannot rely on the fact it did not design or implement this technology to avoid potential ADA liability. Most importantly, it will review steps an employer may take to limit the likelihood of discrimination, including providing as much information to applicants and employees about how this technology is being used. Finally, the session will offer guidance about what individuals with disabilities can do to ensure that their qualifications and work are appropriately assessed.
