Universal Design: Process, Principles, and Applications

This resource from DO-IT at the University of Washington highlights universal design best practices in higher education. In the resource, Sheryl Burgstahler describes the framework for applying universal design in education, including information on the scope of the application area, a definition of universal design, guidelines, and the application process. The principles of universal design (UD), universal design for learning (UDL), and universal design for information technology (UD OF IT) are also highlighted. Eight areas of application for UD principles are explored, which include inclusiveness, physical access, delivery methods, and more. Examples of best practices for UD in instruction, services, technology, physical spaces, projects, conference exhibits, presentations, and professional organizations are also provided.

A PDF version is provided as well.
