Our previous blog post discussed a number of websites that cover disability news, but for a closer look into life with disabilities, magazines can be one of the best sources. Disability magazines are often written by experts who research disabilities or work with people with disabilities, or by people with disabilities themselves. Below are a few outstanding disability periodicals that we recommend as possibly worthy of your time.
The ASHA Leader
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) The ASHA Leader is a monthly magazine and website for and about audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. The ASHA Leader publishes reports, essays, op-eds, and more. From their website, you can access everything published in the magazine and more. From the home page, you can quickly navigate to their latest and most read articles, quick reads, or narrow your options using the buttons in their “Topics” section on the lower right. You can also explore the major sections of The ASHA Leader via the navigation menu, which includes audiology, speech-language pathology, news, a link to their podcast, and a link to their magazine archives, which goes as far back as 1999. The ASHA Leader website also includes links to four ASHA journals, as well as special collections via ASHA Wire, the over-arching network that connects all ASHA publications.
New Mobility
Launched in 1989, New Mobility is a multiple-award-winning magazine that publishes content by and for people who use wheelchairs and other mobility devices. New Mobility focuses on exploring and enjoying life with mobility devices, breaking their content into four major categories: Health, Lifestyle, Products & Technology, and “Pro Tips”, which are more personal articles from authors with disabilities speaking on specific experiences, including subjects like body image, gear hacks, and daily dilemmas. From the home page of their website, you can quickly navigate to features and popular articles, as well as content from New Mobility’s parent organization, the United Spinal Association.
URevolution
URevolution, short for “uncomfortable revolution”, is a Black, disabled, woman-owned social enterprise seeking to tell better, more positive, and authentic stories about life with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Their lifestyle magazine was launched in the spring of 2018, and is broken into four major categories: Careers, Sex & Dating, Relationships, and Lifestyle. The magazine also has an online store, each purchase from which directly supports the company. URevolution tells stories that are bold, direct, and that celebrate disabilities instead of discussing how they “overcome” them, and strive to make having difficult – but necessary – conversations about disabilities easier.
