Does Auto Captioning Effectively Accommodate Deaf People?
This video from the National Deaf Center (NDC) explores how auto captioning and automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology accommodate deaf students and staff. Accessibility and effective communication in classrooms, meetings and events, and extracurricular activities, as well as ASR best practices are highlighted. Auto captioning compared with manual speech-to-text services (STTS) is also discussed. The presenters ultimately examine the limitations associated with ASR technology, which may not reduce barriers, meet legal and moral obligations, or provide equitable access. A case study and real life examples guide the presentation. The video recording runs 52:51 minutes in length. Presentation slides are also provided.
