Making Social Media Accessible

Social media platforms are great tools for sharing information directly with consumers, including COVID-19 guidance that people can use to protect themselves, their families, households, and their communities. However, if social media content is not accessible or does not take the needs of people with disabilities in mind, then access to important information is missed.

In this webinar, skilled users of social media with accessibility expertise will discuss the impact of using social media to reach a variety of audiences within the disability community. Previous research has suggested that these social media platforms may have a greater likelihood of being used to share vital health information related to COVID-19. Presenters will also demonstrate how to make shared information more accessible on frequently used platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok to reach the largest possible number of people.

The National Autism Indicators Report on Health and Health Care

This webinar presents findings from the recent National Autism Indicators Report: Health and Health Care. This report, the sixth in the National Autism Indicators Report Series produced from the Life Course Outcomes Research Program area at the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, reports indicators of health and health care for autistic people across the lifespan. Topics covered include overall health, health services, medication, insurance, and accessing services. The report combines data from two national surveys about health, one national sample of hospital inpatient stays, and previously published findings from Kaiser Permanente Northern California patient records.

The findings highlight that autistic people have many healthcare needs that are not adequately addressed and needs for non-physical health concerns such as mental health and specialty care are more often unmet. The report also highlights the racial and ethnic disparities that persist in health and healthcare in the US. Economic disparities are also of particular concern in autistic persons, where costly services and insurance inadequacies are common.

Understanding health and healthcare needs across the life course can support recommendations on how to improve health and health care at critical points across a person's life. The purpose of this report is to catalogue indicators to aid in decision making to this end.

COVID-19 Outcomes Among People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a large and heterogeneous health disparities population, may have the risk of more severe COVID-19 outcomes due to: 1) co-occurring health conditions; 2) a disproportionate percentage of the population living in a congregate setting; and 3) the possibility of discriminatory policies and practices regarding access to COVID-19 related resources and care. This webinar will discuss emerging empirical studies that confirm this increased risk, demonstrating higher case rates and case-fatality rates among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, especially those living in congregate settings.
